Loomis ‘n Chip bloomed from a single cartoon that I had drawn for a friend’s employee newsletter. In the cartoon, a man loads Metallica’s Master of Puppets CD into his computer, which causes his computer to start moshing. I had been working on a comic strip called “Brian’s Life!” at the time, but felt as if the strip had hit a creative wall. The 20 rejection letters I received from the various syndicates didn’t help either. Months later, I began to think of alternatives for a new strip, and went digging through some old cartoons I had drawn. When I came across the image of the computer moshing to Metallica, I knew I had found my new strip.

I dumped “Brian’s Life!” and gathered all of the old comic strip gags that I had tucked away. Many gags that didn’t work for “Brian’s Life!” fit nicely into the scheme of the new strip, which I would later name “Loomis ‘n Chip” (it was the first thing I thought of). I decided that I wasn’t going to write and draw for the syndicates, but for myself. In a sense, Loomis ‘n Chip is me having a good time with the characters, not worrying “would an editor go for that?”

I hope you enjoy the strips or, at the very least, get a chuckle from reading one of them. These days, we could all use a laugh or two.

The comic that started it all.
